On June 21st, at 20:12 EDT an

Impulsive Transient Antenna Array, previously deployed at ANITA IV experiments,

recorded an unusual transmission while floating on a balloon above the currently

defunct US Byrd Station in West Antarctica [80°00′53″S

119°33′56″W].



 








“The radio waves that we

detected were arriving at very steep angles, around 33 degrees from below the

surface of the ice,” said Dr. Stephan Missel, a Senior Researched at

Antarctic Research Institute. "By our calculations, the anomalous signal

had to pass through and interact with thousands of km of rock before reaching

the detector, which should have left the radio signal undetectable because it

would have been absorbed into the rock.”
